>>3364753They are clearly energy scavengers from Maxwell’s rainbow. IR and NIR solar cell research is currently intensive ongoing research topic IRL. The goal is to get power from heat radiation frequencies as well. Those would work in cloudy winter nights, and in the darkness of space as well.
Also for cooling, which is a major problem in the vacuum of space where you can only radiate heat away. Maybe with IR/NIR cells you could recycle the heat you produce back to electric power.
