The laws of some western US states are even more lenient, specifically the southwest, there are stand your ground laws and castle doctrine laws, which can exempt a person from murder if it happened in their home in a verifiable act of home defense to deter a lethal threat to yourself or your family. 100 years ago this state was a wild west territory, with Indians, Mexicans, outlaws, and corrupt lawmen killing people for kicks. Our state made these self defense laws in that kind of environment, and never got rid of them since, over 105 years later.

I personally would prefer some stricter laws in this state though, because the government has sold weapons to the Mexican cartel that have never been recovered, roughly 800 AK-47's (Operation Fast and Furious, look that up to if you want) , I own 3 guns and went through all the hoops, but some people can skip right over them by buying from other people directly and not official NCIS gun shops or FFL dealers.

Yeah I agree to an extent, I still think low capacity semi-auto rifles are fine, and the background checks are mandatory at every single US gunshop, online gun purchases do it to (by going through a physical shop), and FFL dealers do it by law also. There's also a form 4473 to act as a record of every lawful purchase. The problem actually arises from people simply completely not caring about these laws and selling their guns in 3rd party deals, or from one person buying a gun and giving it to someone else who hasn't gotten a background check. Although for the amount of guns this state has, it is actually one of the safest states. If it were up to me I'd ban that loophole and make every gun owner show intent to sell their firearms and do it through a gunshop or FFL dealer rather than just 3rd party.

The 800 AKs were lost in Mexico and never recovered by the ATF and FBI, the government was responsible for losing them in a op gone wrong, they were supposed to sell the guns to suspected cartel members and trace them back to the local cartel bosses over the border and work with the Mexican government to take down those bosses (kind of a stupid way to track them down), in the end it didn't work and about 800 AKs that were sold weren't recovered and are likely still in Mexico in cartel hands.

Yeah that's one of the things I mentioned about purchases in the US even. Even with laws and regulations, people will still sell guns unlawfully, most of these purchases don't even happen on the black market they happen in 3rd party deals that are organized online (craigslist gun sales is one example), though in some US states there is no regulation prohibiting these sales or trades on a state or even a federal level, even if there was it wouldn't stop them entirely. Although more guns are sold legally through dealers than illegally still, by a large margin.
