A Marrero man was booked on a second-degree murder charge Friday (April 29) after a two-year-old boy died of injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
Emergency responders discovered the boy, Hayden Umbenhower, unresponsive at a home in the 600 block of Allo Avenue in Marrero on Sunday. Seth Redell, 27, told authorities his girlfriend was Hayden's mother, and that he was caring for Hayden while she was out of town, according to a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office news release.
The boy was rushed to University Medical Center in New Orleans, where he underwent surgery for severe internal head injuries.
Redell initially told investigators the child suffered a minor fall, and that he tried unsuccessfully to revive the boy with cold water, according to the Sheriff's Office. But he "changed his story numerous times on how the child was actually injured" in response to a homicide detective's questioning, the news release states. Redell was booked with second-degree cruelty to a child the same day.
Officers on the scene at Redell's home also issued him a summons for possession of marijuana after smelling a thick odor and finding marijuana, along with paraphernalia.
Meanwhile, doctors determined that the boy "suffered from subdural hematomas, brain swelling and retinal hemorrhaging in both eyes, which they claimed was consistent signs of 'shaken baby syndrome,'" according to the news release.
Hayden died of his injuries on Friday. Redell, who had bonded out of jail on the cruelty charge, was re-arrested at his parents' home in Harvey on suspicion of second-degree murder.
