Java use has dropped a little bit but it's still in very high demand for computer software and mobile. Industries that use more windows will tend more towards C# for software development. Though if you know one of these two, you practically know the other as well.

Front-end web development you're gonna need HTML, CSS, and a scripting language: JavaScript, or Python.

Server development you're also gonna need PHP, perhaps ASP.NET.

Thats misguided because you learn programming, not specific languages, after you know how to code going for a new language is easy.

So OP start learning with Python. learn how algorithms work,etc. Then start looking what you acutally want to do

The correct answer is C#, PHP, Ruby, Java, JavaScript. Just depends on your preference. I prefer working with linux. So I mostly use PHP, python, JavaScript

I agree that python and algorithms is great way to start but if a guy just want to be an back end dev it's pointless to make him learn all essentials for a good programmer.

I want to start learning programming... I work with a lot of video files and use FFMPEG and AVIsynth a fair bit and I want to just automate all my shit, I want to be able to drag my files to a program and it do all the necessary transcoding, video and audio merging, and file naming. Now I assume any language can do that shit, since it's all really simple and basically just calling programs and a couple of "IF...THEN" loops.

But... I also want to do a lot of natural langauge kind of shit, like I take a lot of notes (sometimes transcripts of videos, but also just like random research from the internet) I'd love to have a couple of analysis scripts that can act as a kind of desktop search engine but with cool shit like:
- pronoun counting (how many times is "I" or "You" used)
- Most common word
- average sentence length

And also it be able to pull together keyword results in big slabs of text so it's easy to cross reference.

What language can do both the video conversioncalling stuff and the language stuff?

I currently use windows, but I have a lot of Android devices.

If you want to make high quality software you should know stack of ASM/C/C++ because it's a building block of everything in the computer world. If you prefer just code for yourself I'd recommend you to choose python because it has many libraries and frameworks for everything you want.

Python is not a good language to start imo. It's too smart. You don't get a good grasp of lower level functions that python does for you. Like string operations. You'll never fully understand string operations unless you do it at a very low level. Like assembly or C. Of course you might argue that you don't need to understand it. That's true. But it doesn't give you the clear picture of what's actually happening. So you end up a Psuedo coder who thinks he knows everything.

I recommend python. It's the easiest to learn, and requires the least understanding of data types. I love it, and do all sorts of art/media related scripting with it (exactly the kind of stuff you described). Which then lead to a job as a django developer.

Java is more in demand, but python is an absolute treat to learn and use. Just start with the easiest project that would help you personally and keep making more. You'll soon have a portfolio and lots of tools to get your personal projects done. It's really easy once you realize it's just a long set of instructions, nested inside more instructions (basically)
