Make sure you learn enough grammar to understand intermediate level texts decently well (not simple textbook shit or text intended for kids but actual meaningful things like news articles, blog posts and similar things). That moment is when you want immersion. Otherwise you won't take any profit out of it if all you know in French is how to buy a baguette without even understanding the answer.
Once your level is good enough to survive daily life in France you should ideally spend at least a few months in the country. Having a decent knowledge of the language will give you enough confidence to practice it in real life situations and that's when you get benefits out of it.
