In my experience only tea enthusiasts have eletric kettles in home, as there often is not another use (that I know of ) for an electric kettle beyond tea. The closest thing that many Americans would have in their home would be a Keurig coffeemaker. And you can just use that and not put coffee in it in order to get a single cup of boiling or hot water. But if you don't have an electric kettle or keurig, microwave would be the only rapid way to heat up water aside from boiling on the stove like you're making noodles
