How I see it, if you are happy, that in itself is a personality change. Our personalities as far as I'm aware is heavily affected by our emotions. Somebody who becomes seriously depressed starts thinking differently, liking different things and behaving differently. If you were to dig yourself out of being sad and lonely, your personality would change subtly.
I would say it's better to strive for contentment instead of latching onto your sadness and loneliness and not just living the rest of your life like that. It would require a change in personality, either with the help of medication or a change in life style.
I'm not really sure what else I can say here, so hopefully I've helped or another anon can offer some advice for you, OP. Nobody should be sad and lonely.
