the genocide in rwanda can be traced back very directly to the brutal belgium colonial rule (which left the country in rampant poverty and extreme racial hatred). the two congo wars (the second of which is often referred to as the "african world war", as so many neighbouring countries meddled in it) can be traced back directly to the destabilizing effect of the refugee crisis following the rwandan genocide (+ all the tasty resources in the congo, of course)
so even tho it sounds cliche, I think colonialism still has an impact today. I wouldnt say it's the only factor, but saying
