Let me add on that (not a spic but I played it a lot):
King of Fighters came out for an arcade board that allowed piracy (rare feat for arcades). So needless to say they wound up in the 3rd world quickly.
They also had too little money to buy consoles. So many stuck to arcades cause poor

There was an arcade machine in a grocery store near home and the guys from the neighborhood went there and used to challenge each other. Even strangers came and challenged anyone playing. They just inserted coin and started the fight vs whoever was playing without even asking. And there was also a competitive sport-like rivalry between my group of friends. I personally preferred other games, but this one was the game that put everyone to compete.

Anything is better than SFV, and SF4 is so fucking slow. SF2 and SF Alpha are overrated shit, KoF 2000, 2002 UM, XI and Maximum Impact Reg A are all amazing goddamn games

The combo system was nicer than SF and the three characters meant that you could play with a large group of friends with just one coin.

The simplicity made it competitive.

Besides rolling guard break and multiple super moves, they inovated a lot in the genre and characters have a more complete moveset, including more counter moves and overheads.

The diversity of characters is appealing to colonized third world mentality, when you are devoid of natural identity you mirror yourself on the shiniest shit you see, also it was pretty cheap to play arcade for those who coudn't afford videogames sum that with the competitive factor and you have that tiny rush of adrenaline everytime a crowd formed to see you beat your opponent, thats probably the only moment some of us have where we tasted glory and fame even if to a very tiny degree.

Life went downhill ever since.

Honestly I like KoF's character choices way better than SF's.

Also there was never any true arcade scene in Mexico and South America in the 90s so Street Fighter has no foothold over KOF. They are just two different games that can be emulated on a PC.
