Heroes are pretty difficult to define, so I'll answer both questions at once. I think heroes are people who just go a step further than most people and go all out for whatever nation/whatever they're fighting for. As such in some places, they are praised, other places scorned.
I just zone out to escape everything.

That is one thing I'm puzzled about is that a hero cannot be a hero to all. At some point they have to step on someones toes to do what is right. I always liked heroes who are branded villains because of how they do shit to get stuff done when its for the best.
