I went through a phase where I was all about Power Metal for a while. I don't think I listen to any of those bands any more. The only power metal I ever listen to anymore is Blind Guardian, Iced Earth (which is only kind of powermetal), and Sabaton. I got into IE and BG well before I even knew of power metal as a genre, and I got into Sabaton well after I was sick of power metal. As for Blind Guardian though, while I do like their newer stuff, I agree with you about the older stuff being great. Also, I'm so out of date that I still consider a night at the opera (2002) "the newer stuff" and can't even name anything they have released since then.

Oh, and it's not so much that I dropped bands as it is I just listened to so much different music that they just kind of fade out of my memory. I still have every cd I've ever bought, and most of the shit I've downloaded over the years. As of late though, most of what I listen to is through youtube.
While it is by and far my favorite genre, I'm not one of those people who only listens to metal. I used to be for many years, but as I got older I'd find myself listening to more and more genres of music to the point where now I'll enjoy just about anything. I've gotten to the point where I'm convinced that pretty much every genre of music has something to offer.

That all said, I've been on a real megadeth/annihilator kick the past few days. I just interject all sort so of other shit into the mix. I think I might even appreciate metal that much more by listening to all sorts of other shit. Like, a Jeff Loomis solo doesn't stand out as nearly as impressive as it actually is if I've been listening to Jason Becker or Marty Friedman all day, but it really stands out if I've been listening to something like Nirvana or Bad Religion.

i listen to other genres too, but nothing ever really sticks as much as metal & some of its subgenres, its just some songs here and there, rarely an entire album, but i do enjoy a lot of different things

if its one thing i cant really listen to, its acoustic music, with some exceptions
