I feel like Dolphins, Elephants, and Octopuses are probably intelligent enough to be considered protected - Dolphins have functioning language, for example, so I think it's safe to say that not all animals are inherently inferior, per se.
Second part of this argument: If the roles were reversed, say, if an alien species found us and made first contact, how would we want to be treated?
I think it's safe to say that some animals aren't necessarily worth our time and care (Fish imo) but it's still reasonable, and it's something that we as a species need to consider.
Although PETA is awful and I don't support them at all, just playing devil's advocate.
