Butter would actually work in an apocalypse scenario and when you don't have a ready supply of gun lube, concentrated animal fat also works as well but is much more messy and will have to be cleaned out after use. The same must be done for blades that you plan on storing for many years, they must be lightly lubed then stored in a dry place. Some militaries around the world literally store thousands of guns by dunking them in a case of oil and leaving them boxed up for decades, this preserves them.
