South Korea has one of the highest rates of suicide anyway (2nd highest in the world, 1st in the world for a nation with more than 10 million people). It doesn't matter if you are rich, you will still most likely be lonely, stuck in a redundant or repetitive career making good money, feeling empty or useless even with all your money, and live in a society that values those repetitive circle jerk useless good money making careers and having very few to no real friends after high school or be forced to just travel the world and find a better life with more meaning elsewhere.

That's true among the elderly suicides, 70% of the elderly suicides are because they felt they were an economic burden to their families. But according to the WHO the most common cause among young people suicides in South Korea (young people have the highest rate of suicide there), is from school pressure, most of those that do commit suicide had good paying jobs or were in college or were middle-aged and became unemployed. So money alone is not the only factor.

An analysis by the National Statistical Office in 2010 showed that 7.5 percent of young people aged 20 to 29 felt suicidal, due to the " urge to commit suicide and the reason for the disease " (people aged 15 to 29). Their biggest reason for suicidal thoughts accounted for 30 percent of the total because of financial difficulties. The answer was " loneliness and solitude, " followed by 16.5 percent, followed by work problems in third place, and family troubles in fourth place. Economic crisis is the biggest factor that makes people think of suicide.

If you classify everyone that feels suicidal as being "mentally ill" or having a "disease" there's a lot to be said right there. Your societal pressures for education and money are insane in East Asia, so much so that some people have great jobs and are just miserable with their lives because it was not what they wanted to do. The WHO international analysis of suicide in South Korea found that 1/3rd of young people suicides was not because of financial difficulties. South Korea is a wealthy nation, yet it has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, there's more to it than just money.

Having a lot of money and no life goals, real friends, and having your family fight over who gets your money when you die is worse than being poor but having purpose in life. This is something East Asian societies don't understand, there's nothing wrong with being poor, so long as you are happy.

I would if I had a lot, but I already am poor by my country's standards. Less than $500 in the bank right now and mounting bills, but at least I am happy in life and feel like I have purpose.

Rich people don't contemplate suicide that much because they have a future to look forward to. Some might be in denial of their status and claim to want to die but they don't actually believe it. They're usually using it as sort of an emotional signal flare begging for help because they repress too much. A rich person is more likely to kill someone else than kill themselves.
