I found it terribly boring. The awesome thing about DC was the comfiness of its simplicity. Simple yet catching story, simple yet likeable characters, simple yet very entertaining gameplay all packed up with a wonderful OST and neat visuals. Just about as pure as comfy can get.

DC2 ruined all that. Boring as fuck generic nonsensical plot, terrible characters, gameplay is a bad ripoff of DC's, the OST is average at most. Plus the characters are dubbed and it's so fucking abhorrent. The characters without voice was the cherry at the top of the comfy cake that was DC and they managed to ruin even that with one of the worst dubs I've ever witnessed.

It was released just 2 years after DC so it could've had almost the same amount of nostalgia points but it didn't because it's objectively shit.

Also the combat is worse and yeah, they removed lot of cool features. The only mildly interesting thing about DC2 I can think of is permanent death. I was quite surprised when I first died and got thrown back into the main screen.

It is funny cause even though minimalistic you are actually releaved when you see the village as it was before it got destroyed. All NPC's mostly ignored that the world had been destroyed with no emotion besides Toan who'd be left in awe most of the time, and in the end he smiles for the first time at Xiao and runs toward's his mom's house.

Fuck man, a 1 minute cutscene with no voice acting got me more emotional than the "the last of us" meme

I think that's what makes Toan such a good character. Not the generic guy being a badass or a coward or freaking out about everything, just a kid being forced to fight evil and being silently and wholeheartedly amazed at everything going on around him. Man, the more I think about it the more I realize not dubbing the characters was the best choice ever

I don't think I played another game where the MC is afraid, most scared vidya characters are stereotypically carven

Fun thing is that it was probably not a design choice but technical/time limits, DC turning from a PS1 game too a PS2 launch title

But they made dialogues for all other characters, they could've easily done the same for Toan. I think the lack of dubbing might have been due to time constraints though

That demo looked comfy as fuck too. It's amazing how much the final game changed, especially how many things they decided to keep out most likely because of time/budget problems. I wonder if the demo is still around somewhere in Level-5's offices, long ago forgotten.

Do you think the game would've been even more of a masterpiece if they had had enough time to do all they wanted or would they have added maybe too many things and ruined the comf?

Only other differences I notice are the bigger overworld (probz removed for hardware reasons) and the carpet gimmick.

Well, more levels would of bern tedious I think, I'd love more exploring inside the towns we created

I feel like they only did the 100 level dungron/Demon Shaft cause of all their unused assets that would go too waste

Yeah, you're right. I dunno, maybe they could afford to make physics more fluid on the demo because they didn't have anything else. The final game had to care about more detailed graphics, monsters' AI, other characters moving around the villages...

If I recall correctly they added the Demon Shaft only in the EU/US versions because of a bug that made impossible to obtain the flapping duster (the key to the back levels on the "last" dungeon). Anyway what you say might have actually been another good reason to add it
