Until 1783, the British crown considered the US (13 colonies at the time and all of the land they would expand in to) as part of the great wide wonderful British Empire and considered them British colonial nationals. The 13 colonies were the largest colonies that consisted of Europeans in the British Empire at the time (13 colonies population in 1780 was 3 million people, almost all European whites).
