As for pots and soil, it really depends on what you're growing. I like to grow a lot of cactus and succulent plants, which generally prefer really sandy soil with little organic matter. I just mix compost with perlite for them myself.
But for more "regular" plants, such as camelia, rhododendron, etc, you can just use regular compost.
As for pots, you want to get one that's a good fit for the plant. The fenestraria in pic related prefers wide, shallow pots because they have shallow root systems and tend to spread out wide, kind of like grass. But something like a camelia would prefer a thinner and taller pot.
And for best results, you want to use fertiliser for them. But it's important to get the right kind of fertiliser, and to also only give it to them while they're actively growing, which for most plants is during the spring and summer. Most plants go dormant over winter, and so they don't need much water over that time and also no fertiliser while they're not growing.
