It is understandable how many students from the elementary through high school level would be naturally opposed to this application of expectancy theory with the valence component based on the “learning goal” orientation as I have described, because juvenile attitudes often perpetuate bad character traits through ignorance, and the pursuit of selfish gratification more than unselfish gratification. However, to think that teachers have not already adopted the application of expectancy theory as I have described is surprising! The premise of firing poor-performing teachers and rewarding exceptional ones assumes the view that poor performing teachers are performing poorly because they apparently have those juvenile attitudes; perhaps they value their paycheck over their students academic well-being.
