Just start by getting a German language learning book or online program (these are very helpful when it comes to grammar rules), then when you get to advanced Deutsch find a fluent speaker to have conversations with you and help you. German is the second most spoken language after English in select parts of the US, such as Pennsylvania and Ohio and several other states. Not sure how often you might encounter it in Australia though.
