This is what we need less of. The devs end up wasting time and money into a massive world rather than making the game fun.

I would much rather pay 10usd less for a well designed game. That comes out more often. Than one 100usd game with a big overworld.

Ive never played the witcher. But open world games are very risky for the developer. I never said they where bad, but they create an emphasis in what doesn't make a game good.

I'd say GTA V vs San Andreas is a perfect example of maps becoming so big they feel empty.

Despite GTA V being around 3-4 times larger. Most of that space is taken up as ocean and mountains. Not to mention there is a whole region east of Los Santos that could fit two small towns in it.

Depends on whether you mean "failed" in a commercial sense --as most openworld games are AAA titles-- or from a gameplay sense.
AssCreed games are all technically open world games but they're the same bland shit pasted again and again.
Same with FO4 and Skyrim.
