US general complains about Aussie not fighting hard enough in New Guinea (these are 16-17 year olds who have been tricked into fighting the Japs by telling them they would just be guarding a beach. Instead they are sent into the wilds on New Guinea to fight veteran Japanese soldiers while hugely outnumbered). US general says there aren't enough Aussie deaths so they must be hiding and not fighting.
McArthur demands US troops to be sent. US conscripts are sent in.
US conscripts end up failing completely (hiding from the Japs, refusing to advance, falling back whenever there is contact.)
Australian teenage troops are exhausted. McArthur asks Blamey (Aussie general) if he needs US conscripts to replace them while they rest.
Blamey says "I'd rather keep the exhausted Australian troops. At least I know they will fight"
These were just US conscripts. I'm sure the US Marines would have done an excellent job.
But the fact remains. Random, untrained Aussie teenagers fought better than trained adult US soldiers.
