It's a regional thing. In my area we don't generally. But if I have my shoes on and have to go get something from inside the house I'm not gonna take them off.
I live in a fucking suburb, there aren't any giant pits of mud or tar sticking to the bottom of my shoes and they aren't gonna track anything inside the house.
If my shoes really were dirty because I had been hiking or stepped in dogshit or something then yes I would take them off before tracking shit all over the carpet.
