Why do Americans have multiple towns of the same name in their country?

This happens in the UK, but very, very rarely. Even as a bong I can think of multiple examples in the USA. Portland, Salem, Charlotte, Meridian. I could go on and on

I am genuinely curious, not trying to shit on you. Bongs did after all land in the US and immediately name things Boston, Manchester, Bedford, Worcester etc.

Germans were the third non-native group to enter the USA. They became the most populous in the end, but the Dutch and British hated you because at the time you were peasants. I imagine the reason was in the eyes of those who made the decision the nation was founded by Dutch/Brits and the Germans only helped populate it

Yeah but with twice as many people. Hopefully a Russian/Canuck can tell us whether it happens in their country, because those are better comparisons

I would imagine not. The US was a land grab, so tons of people of similar backgrounds often with the same surname all went out and settled with no real way of knowing what anyone else was doing. Canada, while huge, doesn't even have a third as many cities and towns as the US has. As for Russia, I'm just guessing, but because it is part of the old world, I imagine it still has multiple of the same name, but not nearly as many as the US.
