Drug crimes are handled poorly everywhere. It's as if people simply ignore the fact that some chemicals, when introduced to human body, have an effect similar to reproduction. People are weak. Everyone. Not just addicts. Addicts are people who were taken advantage of. Everyone else simply hasn't had the opportunity. If you are addicted to a drug, you will commit drug crimes. Nobody deserves to die simply because they are human. Yes, it's easier for some to avoid the trap than others. Most drug crimes are non violent, and the harm produced is very local to drug use community. I think it's very important to understand the effect of a drug, and instead of KILLING PEOPLE to prevent drug use, maybe do something to prevent the desire for drug... whether that means recovery and treatment programs, or something more radical such as prescription narcotics. There is a lot of emotion and misunderstanding with this issue, and naturally so, but I wish that one day everyone will be on the same page.
