The soviets were hoping he would attack britain on the island directly so their army would be distracted. Also they required heavy air defeats. The goal was the end of communism not the end of britain. Churchill himself wanted hitler to make progress towards that which is why he did the whole north africa thing which stalin considered a distraction.

They got directly involved only after the attack. If america had gotten involved directly with the war later on it would have been too late depending on when they got involved.
