It's a shitty laptop I got last year cause I spilt cleaning liquid on my old one.

Well, it's an overlay network, I'm planning on building an API for it. There are a bunch of ideas I have for things to use it for; I'm toying with the idea of running a modified instance of meguca on it, although that might be a little ambitious in theory it should be able to work.
You could also use it for a kind of decentralised onion proxy network, like Tor but where all peers on the network are exit nodes/proxies.
Thanks, I hope I can make it work. I've run into a lot of NAT related roadblocks but it's nothing thats not been done befoe I think.

I would recommend just using either an Ubuntu variant or Debian as your first distro because they have lots of documentation so it's easy to look up stuff when you get stuck.
Anyway everyone has different opinions on which is the best distro and most of the time they'll just say whichever one they use, when in reality the distro that you choose doesn't matter all that much. The DE and which programs you use are more important choices.

Slackware is different from other distros because it doesn't have forced dependency resolution unlike in other distros. Meaning he won't end up deleting half of his system if he tries to uninstall his DE, for example. In Debian he'd probably get screwed.

Well if you've never used gnu/linux before it's not really rare to know about Gentoo if you've been on /g/ at least once.
I didn't know much about Slackware so I wasn't sure if it would be a good beginner distro but if not having forced dependency resolution is important to him then I guess it would be good

I guess all you can do is try to think what you we're doing at the time/the state of the system (like, temperature etc).
And even with all that it could just be a hardware fault you'll never be able to find.
