The Spanish actually invented the French omelette, which we call French "tortilla" here.
During our war of independence in the 19th century there was a shortage of potatoes and people had to cook their omelettes without them, just with eggs and whatever else they had lying around. Since there was no potatoes because of the French they sarcastically named these flat omelettes after them.
