The thing is, in communism output plummets because the state can't coordinate production, not only for the food but for all the machinery that you need to produce food. In a market economy, production is coordinated by market prices.
The economy is an extraordinarily complex and constantly changing ecosystem, that needs the ability to operate naturally.
