I remember another story of Hamilton walking to his university or some shit and he literally pulled quaternions (four-dimensional complex numbers) out of his ass because he was bored. And now they're consistently being used in computer graphics because they work better than matrices. Also John Carmack's little square root calculation is pretty astounding. It's a programming feat but it's technically numerical math. He basically wrote a piece of code that calculates a mathematical function through bithack wizardry and everyone was like "what the fuck" and he just went "but it works lol"
