The type of code they're using is called a one time pad. Unbreakable (literally), but it tends to spit out alphanumeric results. I presume you could design it to be like a picture, but that would be very complicated.
At any rate, the codes are informationally compact as well. A 10 digit alphanumeric string on send out might also decrypt into another 10 digit alphanumeric string, which could then be segmented and understood with the help of a codebook (ie A2XE could mean send 2 flight wings at night to position E).
I'm not really sure what 235 characters would be though. Nuclear/similar codes of some sort is possibility. But it seems suspiciously long. It's a weird message imho. The fact they're repeating it suggests to me it might be some kind of updated battle orders, or something like that though?
I have a suspicion that last night the defcon level was not 5, no matter what that website says. It could have been the defcon level actually reducing to 5, with commensurate new sets of orders?
