Narrow power and research: my spells will only affect physical properties like mass, velocity, and momentum. This still allows me to change the path of light, since changing direction changes velocity.
Reactive spells only
No extra spells
Grimoire only
Environment boost and practice: my school is affected by the room around the caster. if the caster has a good 9 foot around them, their power is increased. Any large objects or walls infringing on that space reduce control and take away the power boost.

I mean to say I can't create pockets of space, change location, warp space, or any other things like that.
This gives me 4 power and 3 control under ideal conditions, those conditions being regular practice, meditation, and an open space to cast.

So it's basically a situational school that allows its users to control the fundamental forces of physics, but only as long as they're within one hundred meters of a ley-line? That's really cool and has a nice feel to it, but I wouldn't use it myself, because the ley-line limitation is pretty heavy, and the requirement for open space doesn't mesh so well with urban locales.

Yeah, of course. But you still have to be within half a mile of a ley-line, which restricts your apprentice's movements somewhat. I mean, when you are able to cast, the power's phenomenally dangerous with an almost bottomless energy pool to draw on.

The only real reason I chose ley lines was to avoid the negative consequences of mana pool. stamina, blood, and food. I don't like hurting my apprentices. I might have chosen essence field or mana pool, but I subconsciously want to avoid running out of any particular resource. So yeah, laylines aren't fun, but they allow me to cast powerful spells without running out of a resource.

My master plan would be to gain apprentices as rapidly as possible, employ them in mercenary work with quick training using the grimoires, and build an empire of money. As I started to take control of areas, I would hire more apprentices and have the masters research more advanced spells. This way, if I get lucky enough to have access to a lot of apprentices, I could quickly become a world power with absolute control at the helm (I'm the one with the ability to hand out grimoires).

I see what you mean, but Essence Control really isn't that bad, I don't think, given it replenishes within a week with no ill effects. Nice build though. What's your opinion of my prep-heavy alchemy build?

I think it's exactly what you need it to be; a practical alchemist's cult. Provided you had dedicated members, ingredients and ritual circles wouldn't be a problem (who doesn't want to buy an enchanted item? The possibilities are intriguing, anything from farming to war), access to spells wouldn't be a problem, and reactive spells gives you human siege machines. With the time to build up necessary (and I don't think anything but the most dedicated attack could stub your earliest efforts), you would have unkillable momentum regardless of setting.

That's what I was going for. Ad lethal as possible, with the possibility for artifacts and potions of elemental explosion. I thought it was fun to subvert the usual conceit that alchemy's a subtle type of magic, and go all out with the hellfire and brimstone. I figure I'd get started in the Madge tower and stay as hidden as possible until I have 10-12 adepts and 20-30 apprentices, then we go ahead with selling our services to the highest bidder, those services being enchanted gear and offensive potions at exuberant prices. The prep time and rituals might be a slight hassle, but it's a small price for the pay-off, I think.

Just one thing I'd change about method (not setup): you have the ability to enchant practical, everyday items. You could create tools and practical items in-mass and sell them to villages, thus loosening all local tensions and giving nearby people no reason to uncover your presence. I think you're nearly foolproof then. By flooding nearby land with wealth, you've practically already started gaining control.
