Was it normal for standard troops to just have a fucking video camera with them when they were at war?

In the US military there is a segment of recruits who can became military photographers as their military job. And in times of war, some of those unlucky bastards get thrown into an infantry regiment wit ha camera and a rifle. The US has been doing this since WW2, and now in more modern times almost every combat deployed soldier has a body cam or helmet cam.
