Start on normal and don't worry about not being able to even beat the game with all the continues for quite a long time, going to easy will just prolong this. The next games, PCB and IN are much easier, so if you are able to beat EoSD, those will prove pretty quick to beat as well. Although, you don't have to beat any one to go to the next one, it's just what I think is a good way to get started on touhou.
