Anyone here know anything about the Victorian town of Ballarat?

Getting $500k and I'm wondering if I should stay in Melbourne and get an apartment, or move to Ballarat and buy a big block and build a big comfy house.

I don't socialise and I dont like hipsters, so not living in a major city doesn't bother me at all.
