The furry fandom evolved out of sci-fi (archetypal nerds), and it wasn't until the internet and Doug Winger came along that all the crazy fetishes became a thing (since the net provided an echochamber/hugbox).
Afaik, the furry fandom doesn't echo like the LGBTBBQIA+ crowd, and they don't have mainstream support.
But then again, Fritz the Cat was made by a part-jew, so...
