Real talk, one of my acquaintances just got its french nationality. He's from Wales and it only took him like 2 months (although it can take a whole lot longer). Language can be a problem for sure, but it's not that hard to get understood.

I had to reapply for my national insurance number and one call center will say one thing, and the next will say another and that they can't do x. It's a circle of bullshit. It's a smart move for him honestly: he has the double nationality, so if he ever gets badly sick or injured, he could take advantage of the french healthcare system for instance. I'm seriously considering doing the same kind of thing with another european country, maybe germany since I've learned a small bit of German. I would have chosen the UK, but with the whole Brexit thing, it doesn't sound like the best move.
And don't worry, you'll get used to the cheese eventually: someone in my family used to be unable to eat cheese, and he'd puke it right out every time he even tried. But after a few months of trying, it all went away. It's just a question of letting your brain getting used to the idea of eating bacteria-infected fermented milk.

I think people exaggerate, the numbers are much smaller than some people would have you think, there's no great replacement going to happen. I think it's mostly a non issue but I agree vetting processes should be put in place to prevent radicals without introducing yet more mass surveillance.
