Gender now acts as social guidelines of how to act, and with an increasing amount of voices telling us that "you're not a man if you do this" or "real women do this", a lot of people are going against this by going against a perceived gender binary. Hence the infinite genders, because there are infinite ways people differ from each other and infinite ways people want to be seen by others.
Personally, I think it would be easier if we just lost the entire gender as a sociological phenomena definition. Stop defining what a man, woman, trans, etc is and I think a lot of self inflicted internal tension will dissipate.
