That being said, it is comfy food. And the fish, when cooked correctly, is very rich and flavourful and the batter surrounding it is crispy.
It is worth a try, but I think the reason it is one of our national dishes is very much linked to its use as a morale booster during WW2 opposed to being outstanding food
