I lived in a small island town, ~4000 people i think.
And yeah you knew a lot of the people there though some of them were strangers.
But i mean what you said equally applies to just small towns in general.
I used to think it was kinda boring but since i left i can only think of the charm of the place, being completely surrounded by the ocean and not having to travel far to hear the shore, it was nice in it's own way.
Though one big problem was that sometimes the wind blew in the smell from the fisheries towards the entire town, didn't smell nice, people used to call it money smell though.
