How does the Russian language sound for a foreigher ear? Is it harsh or soft, ulgy or beautiful?

I'm a language student and I haven't even been able to study what I wanted. The problem here is that you don't get many choices, if you want to study a non-european language you've got to wait till university, otherwise you'd have to be content with french, english and spanish. I've lost time of my life studying something that has been forced upon me for 5 years. If I had the choice to learn russian instead, I'd probably have mastered it as much as English by now. Plus, kids learn languages much faster, which is definitely not my case anymore.

I don't want to sound rude but French is definitely as useless as Italian imo. The only places it is spoken are France and somewhere in Canada or ex-French colonies. Spanish on the other hand is spoken almost worldwide. Sure latin american spanish isn't the same thing but you get the gist of speaking one variant of a language that has 390 milion speakers, while French barely reaches 75 milions. Russian is a complex language and might be a safer bet than German.

I am a native Spanish speaker. I have heard Russians in 2 contexts: Normal (news, videos from the Donetsk and Lukhansk war) and ASMR videos. In normal context it sound unremarkable. In ASMR videos it sounds soft and nice. The consonants “sk”, “ts”, “ch”, “zh” sound nice when spoken soft.

French OTOH, sounds as if people were about to puke.

I hope you're fucking kidding because English has the weirdest pronunciation ever in spite of having the easiest grammar. Russian is a joke compared to it, the only things you need to watch out for are the stressed "o" vowels and the genitive case for the adjectives which is pronounced "yevo" but is written "ego". Other than that, I didn't notice many differences between spoken and written language except the habit of saying "nu" russians have.
