In 1815 they became one country with the Netherlads and Luxembug, decided by the powers that won the Napoleon wars: this was fine at first but because of the neerlandischepolitiek (politics centered around the Dutch language for intergration) and an economic debt by king Willem II they split and became their own country in 1838.
