>>5101999Circa 2006/2007, reddit used to be a major deal smaller than it is today and the staff had a very steadfast dedication to their key message at the time. Unsurprisingly, that message was 'Free Speech', also unsurprisingly is the fact they'd eventually back down on their words and claim to have never made such a stance.
Due to the nature of the internet and the community pressure to uphold the 'Free Speech' identity of reddit, there arose a whole bunch of 'less-than savory subreddits' as the staff so eloquently put it, subreddits the likes of /r/creepshots, /r/rapingwomen, /r/lolicon, /r/cutegirls, /r/jailbait, /r/picsofdeadjailbait, et al.
The lovely goons over on SomethingAwful took notice of these upstanding communities -certainly they would, considering some of their very own moderators are diaperfurs and paedophiles- and took it upon themselves to create a widespread media campaign, alerting the world of the menace that lurked within reddit in the form of posts on their own dedicated subreddit called /r/shitredditsays, and good lord did they start a wildfire.
Left and right media stations took to reporting the story as the goons dug deeper and deeper into this rabbit hole. Under public pressure to uphold their reputation by the media, financial pressure by the advertisers threatening to back down, and legal pressure by the individuals threatening to sue and the obvious violations of united states law, reddit staff agreed that those 'communities' should've never belonged on reddit and that would see to it that it is clearly communicated that they are no longer welcome. If only the tale stopped there.
