>>5205457This dude's got it right. Omelettes are known as "tortillas de huevo" in Spain. Most people Latin American countries call them by their French name. Mexican corn tortillas are known as "tortillas" because they are perfectly flat, unlike tortas (which in Spain refers to pita-like spongy flatbreads, but in Italy, as well as most of Latin America refers to cake, and in Mexico is used to refer to sandwiches made with baguette-style rolls).
I suppose that tortilla de patata is known as tortilla because it is an unleavened mixture of potatoes (a carbohydrate, which can be thought of as a wheat flour substitute) and eggs (unlike cakes, which have either baking soda or yeast).
