It is a beautiful art based on tradition and self defense, not useful in a street fight but I wanted to instill the idea that you can always be a victim. When he was 9, he broke a bully's arm..I pretended I would punish him at home but he got a party.
I then paid him what ever martial art he wanted and tagged along to learn with him, he wanted to do MMA...fucking fantastic to bond with your kid via a shared activity. I never got the "teen rebellion" phase as we had something in common, 2x a week shared activity. We take out a lot of aggression on the mat via training.
The aikido gave him a sense that he does not need to be a victim but should think twice about being the attacker.
I now have 5 kids and none of them pose a problem with the family and can defend themselves enough that negros fear them.
