birmingham is a big city. just like all big cities there are good areas and shady areas. don't go walking down an alleyway that looks shady at 3am and you'll be fine. I hear people say all the time, "i don't wanna go to (insert big city) I will get stabbed/robbed/killed"
it's simple - don't be stupid and you'll be fine. the city is so goddamn big the chances of you getting attacked without anyone seeing and calling the police is small as well
