Each hold counts as one territory per turn. Seasons change each round. When an oblivion gate opens, they get the same bonuses players get, but only a base of 1, and an additional 2 when attacked. Your last digit determines how many extra territories you take, such as 1 being 1 more and 9 being 9 more.
