Please anon. Doctors know that with the right prescription, depression can be handled well, for sure.
But they try to tell you of things that may help dampen the pain outside of medication.
It's just that people going to the doctor's generally want a quick fix

It's funny because they really do not. Your behaviour, feelings and thoughts are mostly the result of ~90 billion neurons that resides in your brain. It says itself that having a full understanding of how this works for a human is impossible. Between these neurons there is a connection, a synapse. For the signal to travel through this gap a signal substance is needed, psychiatry often relies on the belief that there is such a thing as "chemical imbalance" which is why various psychiatric drugs are often used to either inhibit binding to specific receptors for these signal substances to prevent connection or the opposit to boost the transmittion. Think about it though, it is true that it's largely unknown what it actually does - something that's rather obvious considering the complexity of your brain.

Exercise, public interaction and hobbies are all good ideas though.
