Sure there's physical receptors involved but they all require currents to operate. Those same currents can be and are used for data transferal.
You are a machine, only out of flesh than of metal but self-awareness only comes from our ability to focus on our currents either subconsciously or actively, hence why humanity evolved here to the point of being able to utilize language, concepts, creativity etc.
