Athenian citizen women were the only women with whom you could produce legitimate offspring, they were to be virtuous, respected, and educated. These women had complete power over the inside of the house, the philosophers of the time often joked about how men were the slaves of their women.
On the other hand, there were the courtesans. These women would often go drinking with groups of men, they would be given incredibly "progressive" freedom when it came to sexual liberation. Some were very respected and often seduced men to spend their fortunes on them. But at the end of the day, they were just whores, and the children you produced with them were nothing to you.
Men need an outlet like this, but now we have mixed the pools together, in the times since ancient Athens ruled the world, it was a system of shame and social norms which held the pools separate. Without respect given to the women who deserve it, and social stigma against the whores, we're all fucked
