Of the the three anime films I've watched only Akira seems to be an actual film rather than an extended episode.

And why does the animation suck so much?

I didn't expect it to be "good", but I didn't expect it to be this bad.

This thing got a 15 certificate, even though it's clearly aimed a relatively young audience, cos of Japan's inclination to add fanservice seems to have gotten really bad over the last 15 years.

Honestly, I went knowing that it was going to suck.
I just wanted to watch anime in the cinema since I never got the chance in the 90s. Hopefully the next one lined up is going to be good: In the Corner of the World. Seems like an actual movie.

That's because Akira is just an actual film, it didn't come from a series so it's not made for a pre-existing fanbase to begin with.
Fairy Tail's a series spanning hundreds of fucking episodes, the movie's made for people familiar with the franchise. Fairy Tail's pretty fucking garbage, too.

Fanservicey anime's been a thing for ages, it's only more noticeable today thanks to the internet making fanservicey anime more available.

Gunbuster for example was from 1988 and had a bunch of fanservice. It was essentially just cute girls in mechs.
